Immediate implants

An immediate implant is placed in the same appointment as your tooth is extracted, so you never have to live with a gap. We combine the extraction, implant placement and a natural-looking temporary crown into a single visit whenever your case allows.

Immediate dental implant placed on the day of extraction, Thorndon Dental Wellington

What are immediate dental implants?

Immediate placement means the implant goes into the jaw at the same time as the failing tooth is removed, rather than waiting months for the extraction site to heal first.

  • One appointment instead of several. Extraction and placement happen together.
  • Shorter overall treatment. Healing and implant integration overlap.
  • Bone and gum preservation. Helps maintain the natural contours of your jaw and gumline.
  • No visible gap. A temporary crown means you walk out smiling.
Good to know

Am I suitable for an immediate implant?

Immediate implants work best when the extraction site is free of significant infection and there is enough healthy bone to hold the implant firmly. Not every tooth is a candidate, and an honest assessment matters more than speed.

If your case is not suited to same-day placement, we will recommend a conventional staged implant instead and explain exactly why.

Frequently asked questions

Can a dental implant really be placed the same day as an extraction?

Yes, when conditions are right. If the extraction site is healthy and there is enough bone, the implant can be placed immediately after the tooth is removed, often with a temporary crown fitted the same day.

Is everyone suitable for immediate implants?

No. Active infection or insufficient bone at the site can make staged placement the safer choice. We assess suitability with a 3D scan before recommending either approach.

Will I leave the appointment with a tooth?

In most immediate implant cases, yes. A temporary crown is placed on the implant so there is no visible gap, and it is replaced with your permanent crown once healing is complete.

How long until the permanent crown is fitted?

Usually three to six months after placement, once the implant has fully fused with your jawbone.

Who will carry out my treatment?

Immediate placement is one of the more demanding implant techniques, and experience matters. Dr Parm Gill has over 12 years of implant dentistry behind him, with accreditation through the Australian Society of Implant Dentistry and membership of the International Team for Implantology. Dr Raquel Kirwin adds advanced training in surgical techniques.
