Single tooth implants

A single tooth implant replaces one missing tooth with a titanium post and a custom-made crown, without touching the healthy teeth either side. At Thorndon Dental in Wellington, it is our recommended long-term solution for a single missing tooth.

Why choose an implant instead of a bridge?

A bridge replaces a missing tooth by grinding down the two healthy teeth beside the gap and using them as anchors. An implant stands on its own, so your healthy teeth stay exactly as they are.

  • Natural appearance and function. The crown is matched in colour, shape and size.
  • Protects your other teeth. No drilling of healthy neighbours, and no drifting into the gap.
  • Preserves your jawbone. The implant stimulates bone just like a natural root.
  • Built to last. With proper care an implant can last for decades.
  • Easy to live with. Brush and floss as you always have.
Good to know

Losing one tooth affects more than your smile

Neighbouring teeth drift into the gap, your bite changes, and the jawbone beneath begins to shrink. An implant stops all three.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a single tooth implant take from start to finish?

Typically three to six months. The implant is placed in one short appointment, then needs a few months to fuse with the bone before the final crown is attached.

Is a single tooth implant better than a bridge?

For most patients, yes. An implant does not require grinding down the healthy teeth beside the gap and it preserves the jawbone, so it is the more conservative long-term option. Your dentist will confirm which suits your case.

How much does a single tooth implant cost in Wellington?

The cost depends on your case, including whether any bone preparation is needed. We provide a written quote at your consultation before any treatment begins, and ACC may contribute if the tooth was lost in an accident.

Does getting an implant hurt?

The placement is done under local anaesthetic so you should feel no pain during the procedure. Mild soreness for a few days afterwards is normal and manageable with standard pain relief.

What are the stages of treatment?

Four: consultation and planning with a digital 3D scan and written costing; implant placement under local anaesthetic; healing while the implant fuses with the jawbone; and finally the custom porcelain crown, matched to your natural teeth.

Who will place my implant?

Dr Parm Gill, who has over 12 years of implant experience and is accredited with the Australian Society of Implant Dentistry, including its Level IV Advanced Surgical Skills course. He is a current member of the International Team for Implantology.
